Family-run on Wyandotte East

Spices make aromas.

7Spices in the kitchen. Aromas in the room. Officially we are Aromas Cafe by 7Spices — a Lebanese kitchen, café, and alcohol-free lounge in Windsor, Ontario.

We did not replace 7Spices. We built Aromas around it — the kitchen kept the spices, the cafe caught the aromas.

Chapter 1 — 7Spices

For seven years this kitchen was simply 7Spices: shawarma off the spit, Lebanese-grilled tawouk and kafta, hummus, mana’iesh, and the house baharat blend mixed by hand each week. That blend is still the thing every plate has in common — it warms the rice, deepens the grill, and marks the bowls people reorder.

Everything is built the slow way: chicken and beef marinated overnight before they go on the spit, garlic dip scratch-made every morning rather than pulled from a tub, and pita loaves that come out warm enough to fold. Our kitchen is 100% halal, and there is no alcohol anywhere in the building.

Chapter 2 — Aromas

Windsor was leaning into cafes and lounge nights, and we wanted a room that matched how people already used the place: coffee in the afternoon, a full grill platter later, friends who stay until close. So the interior was remodeled for lingering, the drink list grew, and the name became Aromas — without letting go of 7Spices.

That last part matters more than it sounds. Halal and alcohol-free means a family can bring grandparents and toddlers to the same table, and a group of friends can sit for three hours over shisha, coffee, and dessert without anyone having to explain why they are not drinking.

Chapter 3 — The Family Table

The owner and his wife spend the day here, from morning preparation through the last tables at night. Running a family restaurant leaves little time to go elsewhere to see the people they love, so they ask those people to come to them.

Parents, siblings, children, extended family, and longtime family friends gather in the largest corner of the lounge, where two big couches and two smaller ones make room for everyone. They are hosted with the same attention as any customer — food brought over, coffee poured, and time made for conversation — while service carries on at the tables around them.

Guests see a little of Lebanese family culture the way we live it: several generations together, plates passed around, coffee poured, conversation carrying, and hospitality moving naturally between the family corner and the rest of the room. Friends and relatives receive the same care as guests; guests receive the same warmth as family. It is not a performance scheduled for the restaurant. It is how family life fits inside a business that asks so much of the people running it.

Written on the walls

Everything Here Was Drawn by Hand

Nothing in that remodel went to a print shop. The menu board, the signs, the jokes — all of it chalked on the walls by the family that runs the place, and redrawn whenever the mood changes.

The bridge

The food did not change identity. The room caught up to it. 7Spices is still the kitchen — the grill, the baharat, the catering trays. Aromas is the cafe and lounge around that kitchen: specialty coffee, sweets, soft light, and a table that stays yours.

Windsor creators: date night on us

If you write or film about food in Windsor–Essex — a blog, an Instagram, a TikTok, a magazine column — bring someone you like and let us host the two of you for an evening: mezze and a grill platter from the 7Spices Kitchen, coffee and dessert at Aromas, the lounge afterwards if you want to stay. Our treat, no script. We ask for nothing except whatever you would honestly say about it, and because the room is halal and alcohol-free, it photographs the way a date night should — candlelight, chalk walls, and nobody's drink in the shot.

Email us with the subject “Date night” and a link to where you post, and we will set a table aside.
